CLEAN ENERGY BY BURNING OUR TRASH
I'm just curious about this article. Our society seems so far from having "zero trash," though it is a great aspiration, so why not burn the trash we do produce in order to produce clean energy, and continue recycling what we can, in the meantime? Does anyone have any thoughts on this? And why is Europe always ahead of the U.S. when it comes to the environment and health, etc.?

Europe has A LOT less land mass than we do here. You can travel from one country to another in hours. Germany is the size of Oregon but with 30 million people. They treasure their natural resources because they are so scarce. They are rabid environmentalists. There are large fines if you don't recycle every bit of your trash -- even on tourists. When you check into a time share, they explain how to sort your trash. It takes months of classes to get a fishing license and once you have one you are part of the environmental brigade that oversees the waterways. They have a use for every square inch of land. There are no vacant fields. If it isn't forest preserve (which we saw them cleaning pine needles from when we were there in winter of 1992) then they cultivate, run cattle on it or build on it. You are absolutely right that we could learn a lot from our European brothers when it comes to conservation.
Thanks, Barb - that makes so much sense! That is so interesting too - I have never traveled there. I do wish we could learn from them and be a bit more proactive!
